What are you feeding your kids? 3 simple rules to follow.

What are you feeding your kids? This is always a touchy subject, and with a 5 and a 2 year old at home let me just say I get it. Life is busy, things need to be accomplished, and food can easily be an afterthought. What you are feeding your kids often gets pushed to the back burner, and that's when the excuses begin. I've heard it all....my kid is a picky eater, he doesn't like vegetables, she only likes the bad stuff, etc. The truth is, kids eat what we give them to eat, their little bodies will not allow them to starve. Starting them with whole, unprocessed foods at a young age is vital. Children learn their behaviors and patterns from their parents and food choices are no exception. There are so many different opinions and schools of thought on how to properly introduce food and how long to nurse, and everything else under the sun when it comes to feeding children it's almost impossible to know where to start.

Over the next couple of weeks, we'll dive more into some of the ideas and strategies that we've used at our house. We will start from birth and walk through the first 5 years which gets most kids right about to school age. Then we will spend more time talking about how to pack school lunches or choose food for kids at school. The truth is, food is simple, and as a society we have it so complicated and backwards it's comical. Food has become big business in America, and if you think that they have your families health as their top priority, you are sorely mistaken. Here are some general rules that we follow in our home with regards to food:

  1. Eat food as close to how it exists in nature as possible.

  2. Watch the ingredient list on anything that is packaged or processed – the fewer the better.

  3. Eat Organic/free range/chemical free whenever possible.

If you and your family can start with these simple rules you will be on your way to better health.
