Why Should I get Adjusted?

The easiest way to answer this question is by asking two more questions; do you have a spine? And do you have environmental, emotional and/or physical stressors in your life? If you answered yes to either of those questions, then you should be getting adjusted; simple as that. However, you may still be wondering, “but WHY?”

Chiropractic has been practiced for over 120 years. It focuses on the relationship between the nervous system and bodily functions, because of the way the brain sends signals to the body through the central nervous system running through the spine. So, when the spine becomes misaligned, the messages being sent from the brain become altered; similar to when there is a kink in a water hose. An adjustment is a form of applying controlled force/pressure onto the spine and joints to shift them back into alignment and in turn creating open passageways from the brain to the body’s organs. Chiropractors believe an adjustment is a powerful tool to help aide the body in self repair.

There are many causes to your spine becoming misaligned, which are categorized as an environmental, emotional and/or physical stressor. Environmental stressors include, but are not limited to: noises, crowding, air quality, colors, natural disasters, foods, and light. Many of these environmental stressors also cause anxiety, which is technically an emotional stressor, therefore causing your spine to become misaligned. Other emotional stressors include: major life events (ie. wedding, birth, death, divorce, etc.), school/work responsibilities, relationships, and pessimism. Many people think physical stressors are the ONLY reason you would need to be adjusted, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Some examples of physical stressors are: falling, car accidents, chronic sickness, whiplash, sports injury, and poor posture.

Stress is your body’s way of responding to any kind of demand or threat. When you sense danger—whether it’s real or imagined—the body's defenses kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process known as the “fight-or-flight” reaction or the "stress response" … All types of stressors whether physical, chemical or emotional can have a detrimental effect on the body. If you’re super stressed over an argument with a friend, a work deadline, or a mountain of bills, your body can react just as strongly as if you’re facing a true life-or-death situation. And the more your emergency stress system is activated, the easier it becomes to trigger and the harder it becomes to shut off. (helpguide.org)

When the body is in constant “fight-or-flight” mode, it is bound to take on some ware and tare. Most likely this will not happen overnight, however many people wake up one morning and feel like they have been hit by a truck and cannot distinguish what caused the problem. This is typically what we hear when we have a new patient, but the worst part about it is by the time the brain recognizes pain, the nerve is already 80% damaged. So, think about it, if the nerve carrying messages from your brain to your organs is 80% damaged, how can is possibly be sending the correct message to your body? This is where chiropractic treatment is so important. Once symptoms have been managed during the acute care phase, one may feel better, but the nerve is still damaged and there is still work to be done. The next phase, the corrective phase, is intended to get the nerve and body back to proper function. It is then in the preventative/wellness phase when your body is “healed” and the goal is to stay that way. So, regular adjustments are necessary in keeping the spine aligned and the message pathways open.
